The predisposing factors for emergence agitation include anesthesia, operation, and patient. Sevoflurane anesthesia results in higher incidence of emergence agitation than halothane, because of the rapid emergence, and its effects on central nervous system inducing convulsion and post-operative behavioral changes. The otorhinolaryngologic and ophthalmologic surgeries, post-operative pain, young age, pre-operative anxiety, no past surgical history, and adjustment disorder of patients are risk factors.\n\nDexmedetomidine (DEX), a selective α (2)-adrenoreceptor agonist. Intravenous DEX used after induction of anesthesia reduced sevoflurane-associated EA and postoperative pain in pediatric ambulatory surgery.\n\nThe investigators designed this study to prove the efficacy of oral dexmedetomidine a selective α (2)-adrenoreceptor agonist, on emergence agitation (EA), recovery profiles, and parents' satisfaction after sevoflurane anesthesia in tonsillectomy."}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'ALL', 'stdAges': ['CHILD'], 'maximumAge': '6 Years', 'minimumAge': '2 Years', 'healthyVolunteers': False, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'Inclusion Criteria:\n\n* ASA physical status I-II patients\n* aged 2-6 years\n* patient scheduled for elective tonsillectomy due to recurrent\n* chronic tonsillitis\n\nExclusion Criteria:\n\n* patients with known hypersensitivity to medication drugs\n* coagulation disorders\n* thrombocytopenia\n* significant cardiac\n* renal\n* pulmonary\n* hepatic disease'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT02720705', 'briefTitle': 'Transbucal Dexmedetomidine for Prevention of Sevoflurane Emergence Agitation in Pre-school Children', 'organization': {'class': 'OTHER', 'fullName': 'Assiut University'}, 'officialTitle': 'Transbucal Dexmedetomidine for the Prevention of Emergence Agitation After Sevoflurane Anaesthesia in Pre-school Children', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': 'AssuitU'}}, 'armsInterventionsModule': {'armGroups': [{'type': 'ACTIVE_COMPARATOR', 'label': 'DEX I', 'description': 'active comparator receive 0.5µg/kg dexmedetomidine orally half an hour before operation', 'interventionNames': ['Drug: Dexmedetomidine']}, {'type': 'PLACEBO_COMPARATOR', 'label': 'Saline Control', 'description': '2ml oral 0.9%saline half an hour before operation', 'interventionNames': ['Drug: saline']}, {'type': 'ACTIVE_COMPARATOR', 'label': 'DEX II', 'description': 'active comparator receive,1µg/kg dexmedetomidine orally half an hour before operation', 'interventionNames': ['Drug: Dexmedetomidine']}], 'interventions': [{'name': 'Dexmedetomidine', 'type': 'DRUG', 'otherNames': ['precedex'], 'description': 'oral dexmedetomidine', 'armGroupLabels': ['DEX I', 'DEX II']}, {'name': 'saline', 'type': 'DRUG', 'otherNames': ['0.9% saline'], 'description': '2ml 0.9% saline administered orally half an hour before induction of anesthesia', 'armGroupLabels': ['Saline Control']}]}, 'contactsLocationsModule': {'locations': [{'zip': 'Assiut,Egypt,71571', 'city': 'Asyut', 'country': 'Egypt', 'facility': 'Assiut university hospitals', 'geoPoint': {'lat': 27.18096, 'lon': 31.18368}}], 'overallOfficials': [{'name': 'Halla s Abdel-Ghaffar Abdel-Ghaffar, MD', 'role': 'PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR', 'affiliation': 'assisstant professor in anesthesia and intensive care departement,faculty of medicine,Assiut university,Egypt'}]}, 'ipdSharingStatementModule': {'ipdSharing': 'NO'}, 'sponsorCollaboratorsModule': {'leadSponsor': {'name': 'Assiut University', 'class': 'OTHER'}, 'responsibleParty': {'type': 'PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR', 'investigatorTitle': 'MD', 'investigatorFullName': 'Hala Saad Abdel-Ghaffar', 'investigatorAffiliation': 'Assiut University'}}}}
