Patients are stratified according to concurrent use of anticonvulsant drugs that induce cytochrome P450 (yes vs no drugs or modest-induction drugs).\n\n* Phase I: Patients receive oral procarbazine once daily for 5 days. Treatment repeats every 4 weeks in the absence of disease progression or unacceptable toxicity.\n\nCohorts of 6 patients receive escalating doses of oral procarbazine until the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) is determined.\n\n* Phase II: Once the MTD is determined, patients receive procarbazine as in Phase I.\n\nPatients are followed every 2 months until death.\n\nPROJECTED ACCRUAL: A total of 24-35 patients will be accrued for this study.'}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'ALL', 'stdAges': ['ADULT', 'OLDER_ADULT'], 'minimumAge': '18 Years', 'healthyVolunteers': False, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'DISEASE CHARACTERISTICS:\n\n* Histologically proven malignant glioma of one of the following types:\n\n * Anaplastic astrocytoma\n * Anaplastic oligodendroglioma\n * Glioblastoma multiforme\n* Progressive or recurrent disease after radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy\n* Measurable disease by serial MR or CT\n\nPATIENT CHARACTERISTICS:\n\nAge:\n\n* 18 and over\n\nPerformance status:\n\n* Karnofsky 60-100%\n\nLife expectancy:\n\n* Greater than 2 months\n\nHematopoietic:\n\n* Absolute neutrophil count at least 1500/mm\\^3\n* Platelet count at least 100,000/mm\\^3\n\nHepatic:\n\n* Bilirubin no greater than 1.5 mg/dL\n* SGPT/SGOT no greater than 4 times upper limit of normal\n\nRenal:\n\n* Creatinine no greater than 1.7 mg/dL\n\nOther:\n\n* No serious concurrent infection\n* No other illness that would preclude study\n* Not pregnant or nursing\n* Negative pregnancy test\n* Fertile patients must use effective contraception\n* No prior malignancy within the past 5 years except curatively treated basal cell skin cancer or carcinoma in situ of the cervix\n\nPRIOR CONCURRENT THERAPY:\n\nBiologic therapy:\n\n* No concurrent filgrastim (G-CSF) during the first course\n\nChemotherapy:\n\n* See Disease Characteristics\n* No more than 1 prior chemotherapy regimen\n* At least 3 weeks since prior chemotherapy (at least 6 weeks since prior nitrosoureas)\n* No more than 2 prior courses of carmustine or lomustine and no greater than 460 mg/m2 or 220 mg/m2, respectively\n* No prior procarbazine\n\nEndocrine therapy:\n\n* Not specified\n\nRadiotherapy:\n\n* See Disease Characteristics\n* At least 3 months since prior radiotherapy\n\nSurgery:\n\n* Prior surgery allowed\n\nOther:\n\n* Recovered from toxicity of prior therapy\n* At least 10 days since prior anticonvulsants for patients in Arm II\n* No concurrent investigational agents\n* No concurrent ethanol, ephedrine, isoproterenol, epinephrine, tricyclic antidepressants, paragyliline, narcotic analgesics, antihistamines, phenothiazines, hypotensives, or barbiturates\n* At least 14 days since prior antidepressants (e.g., SSRI and/or MAO inhibitor)\n* Must avoid foods high in tyramine (i.e., dark beer, wine, yogurt, cheese, bananas)'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT00004004', 'briefTitle': 'Procarbazine in Treating Patients With Recurrent Brain Tumor', 'organization': {'class': 'NIH', 'fullName': 'National Cancer Institute (NCI)'}, 'officialTitle': 'A Phase I/II Study of Oral Procarbazine in the Treatment of Recurrent High Grade Astrocytomas', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': 'CDR0000067214'}, 'secondaryIdInfos': [{'id': 'NABTT-9901'}, {'id': 'JHOC-NABTT-9901'}]}, 'armsInterventionsModule': {'interventions': [{'name': 'procarbazine hydrochloride', 'type': 'DRUG'}]}, 'contactsLocationsModule': {'locations': [{'zip': '35294-3300', 'city': 'Birmingham', 'state': 'Alabama', 'country': 'United States', 'facility': 'University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center', 'geoPoint': {'lat': 33.52066, 'lon': -86.80249}}, {'zip': '33612-9497', 'city': 'Tampa', 'state': 'Florida', 'country': 'United States', 'facility': 'H.
