Giving imatinib mesylate before surgery may shrink the tumor so that it can be removed.\n\nPURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well imatinib mesylate works in treating patients with locally advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumor.', 'detailedDescription': 'OBJECTIVES:\n\nPrimary\n\n* Determine radiographic objective response rates in patients with locally advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumor treated with neoadjuvant imatinib mesylate.\n* Determine histological response in patients treated with this drug.\n\nSecondary\n\n* Determine R0-resectability and organ-preserving resectability in these patients after treatment with this drug.\n* Correlate radiographic imaging and metabolic imaging with histological response in patients treated with this drug.\n* Determine the safety and tolerability of this drug in these patients.\n\nOUTLINE: This is a nonrandomized, open-label, multicenter study.\n\nPatients receive oral imatinib mesylate once or twice daily for 4-6 months in the absence of disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. Within 2-3 weeks after completion of imatinib mesylate, patients with responding or stable disease undergo surgical resection.\n\nAfter completion of study treatment, patients are followed at 4 weeks, 6 months, and then at 1 year.\n\nPROJECTED ACCRUAL: A total of 40 patients will be accrued for this study.'}, 'eligibilityModule': {'sex': 'ALL', 'stdAges': ['ADULT', 'OLDER_ADULT'], 'minimumAge': '18 Years', 'healthyVolunteers': False, 'eligibilityCriteria': 'DISEASE CHARACTERISTICS:\n\n* Histologically confirmed gastrointestinal stromal tumor\n\n * Locally advanced disease\n * Potentially resectable disease\\*\n\n * No tumor that can be completely resected (R0) with sufficient margins NOTE: \\*Multivisceral resection may be necessary\n* Tumor must stain positive for c-Kit (CD117) or platelet-derived growth factor receptor-alpha (PDGFRA) by immunohistochemistry\n* At least 1 site of measurable disease\n* No known brain metastases\n\nPATIENT CHARACTERISTICS:\n\nAge\n\n* 18 and over\n\nPerformance status\n\n* ECOG 0-3\n\nLife expectancy\n\n* Not specified\n\nHematopoietic\n\n* Platelet count \\> 100,000/mm\\^3\n* Absolute neutrophil count \\> 1,500/mm\\^3\n\nHepatic\n\n* AST and ALT \\< 2.5 times upper limits of normal (ULN) (5 times ULN if hepatic metastases are present)\n* Bilirubin \\< 1.5 times ULN\n* No chronic active hepatitis\n* No cirrhosis\n* No other chronic liver disease\n\nRenal\n\n* Creatinine \\< 1.5 times ULN\n* No chronic renal disease\n\nCardiovascular\n\n* No New York Heart Association class III-IV cardiac disease\n* No congestive heart failure\n* No myocardial infarction within the past 6 months\n\nImmunology\n\n* No active uncontrolled infection\n* No known HIV positivity\n\nOther\n\n* Not pregnant or nursing\n* Negative pregnancy test\n* Fertile patients must use effective barrier contraception during and for 3 months after completion of study treatment\n* Must be medically fit to undergo surgery\n* No other primary malignancy within the past 5 years except basal cell skin cancer, carcinoma in situ of the cervix, or a primary malignancy that is not currently clinically significant and does not require active intervention\n* No gastrointestinal obstruction or major bleeding episode requiring immediate surgical intervention\n* No uncontrolled diabetes\n* No other severe or uncontrolled medical disease\n* No significant history of noncompliance to medical regimens\n\nPRIOR CONCURRENT THERAPY:\n\nBiologic therapy\n\n* No concurrent anticancer biologic agents\n\nChemotherapy\n\n* More than 4 weeks since prior chemotherapy (6 weeks for nitrosourea or mitomycin) unless disease is rapidly progressing\n* No concurrent anticancer chemotherapy\n\nEndocrine therapy\n\n* No concurrent systemic corticosteroid therapy unless approved by the study sponsor\n\nRadiotherapy\n\n* More than 4 weeks since prior radiotherapy\n* No prior radiotherapy to ≥ 25% of bone marrow\n\nSurgery\n\n* More than 2 weeks since prior major surgery except tumor biopsy\n\nOther\n\n* More than 4 weeks since prior investigational drugs unless disease is rapidly progressing\n* No other concurrent anticancer therapy\n* No other concurrent investigational agents\n* No concurrent warfarin for therapeutic anticoagulation\n\n * Concurrent low molecular weight heparin (e.g., enoxaparin sodium) or heparin for therapeutic anticoagulation allowed\n * Concurrent mini-dose warfarin (e.g.,1 mg/day) for prophylaxis of central venous catheter thrombosis allowed'}, 'identificationModule': {'nctId': 'NCT00112632', 'briefTitle': 'Imatinib Mesylate in Treating Patients With Locally Advanced Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor', 'organization': {'class': 'OTHER', 'fullName': 'Technical University of Munich'}, 'officialTitle': 'Open-Label Trial of Neoadjuvant Imatinib Mesylate (Glivec) in Patients With Locally Advanced Malignant Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST) Expressing c-Kit or Platelet-Derived Growth Factor Receptor-alpha', 'orgStudyIdInfo': {'id': 'CDR0000430499'}, 'secondaryIdInfos': [{'id': 'KRDI-TUM-GIST-CST1571-BDE43'}, {'id': 'EU-20507'}]}, 'armsInterventionsModule': {'interventions': [{'name': 'imatinib mesylate', 'type': 'DRUG'}, {'name': 'conventional surgery', 'type': 'PROCEDURE'}, {'name': 'neoadjuvant therapy', 'type': 'PROCEDURE'}]}, 'contactsLocationsModule': {'locations': [{'zip': 'A-1090', 'city': 'Vienna', 'country': 'Austria', 'facility': 'Allgemeines Krankenhaus -
