Description: This gene belongs to the homeobox family, members of which encode a highly conserved family of transcription factors that play important role in morphogenesis in all multicellular organisms. Mammals possess four similar homeobox gene clusters, HOXA, HOXB, HOXC and HOXD, consisting of 9 to 11 genes arranged in tandem, and located on different chromosomes. This gene is one of several HOXC genes located in a cluster on chromosome 12. Three genes, HOXC5, HOXC4 and HOXC6, are co-transcribed from a primary transcript. Subsequent processing results in gene-specific transcripts, which sometimes share the 5' non-coding exon. The product of this gene may contribute to the breast cell phenotype through co-operative interactions with other HOX-derived proteins and repression of their target genes. Two alternatively spliced transcripts encoding different isoforms have been characterized to date.
